Some of you may or may not know that our fair city of Chicago is also a “santuary city”. For those of you who don’t know what that means, a sanctuary city is one that that does not municipal funds or resources to be used to enforce federal immigration laws. What it basically boils down to is a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy regarding police asking whether or not someone is a illegal immigrant.
However, in Chicago, there has been a recent string of people who have landed in jail after being arrested for minor traffic violations and/or misdemeanors, neither of which usually require jail time. Why is it that these people are being put in jail? Oh yeah, because they are illegal immigrants, and Ald. Billy Ocasio of the 26th ward wants to know who the tattletale is.
Hispanic aldermen are demanding to know why 59 Chicago motorists with Latino surnames have been arrested for traffic violations and other misdemeanors recently only to land in jail because somebody tipped Immigration and Customs Enforcement in violation of the city’s “sanctuary” ordinance.
“We will not tolerate this in Chicago. … We want to know where it’s coming from and who is filing these reports,” said Ald. Billy Ocasio (26th), chairman of the City Council’s Human Relations Committee.
The article goes on to explain that in 1985, then-mayor Harold Washington (Chicago had mayors not named Daley? Who knew?!) issued an order preventing city employees from enforcing federal immigration laws. The federal government was doing a good thing in trying to find illegals who were abusing city services that they, as non-citizens, were not entitled to. The fed even went as far as searching city records to find evidence of illegal immigrants. Amazing!! Federal government making a conscious effort to find illegal immigrants. What a grand utopia the 1980’s must have been!
In 2006, the City Council turned Washington’s order into law. Now, there’s a problem because apparently illegals arrested for traffic violations, misdemeanors, or other non-jailable offenses are ending up behind bars while their immigration status is being investigated. Of course, leave it up to liberals to play the emotional/sympathy card when arguing that this is a bad thing.
At a City Council hearing Tuesday, Ald. Danny Solis (25th) was visibly moved by the testimony of a woman with two young children whose husband has been in jail for over five months.
“It all started because he didn’t have a driver’s license, which shouldn’t have been an arrest to send him to the County Jail” in the first place, Solis said.
Actually, it all started when he crossed the border illegally into this country, but let’s not split hairs, shall we? So now we need to waste taxpayer money with investigations as to why federal law is actually being enforced. Out of the 30 investigations that have taken so far, every single officer has been absolved. Wow, good job there guys. So let’s assume they DO find out who’s been tipping the feds, then what? Charge the “offender” with what crime? Aiding and abetting federal law enforcement? Thank god we have our City Council, looking out for the good of us law-abiding LEGAL citizens.
So what’s the big deal? Police officers aren’t randomly walking up and down the street asking for the immigration papers of anyone who looks suspicious. There seems to be this “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that city officials think is necessary. I agree, we don’t need to go walking up to every Tom, Dick, and Harry acting like the immigration gestapo. I’m right along with most other conservatives in believing that we need to secure the borders first, and then start to do something about the illegals here. I am also, however, a realist. There are many illegals who are law-abiding folks who work hard, pay taxes, and are a boon to their communities. Why not start deportations with those illegals who are violating the laws of this country? You know, the country they so desperately wanted to move to that they risked violating federal law?
As I said, these investigations are a waste of time, and money. Honestly, how are the citizens of Chicago being serviced here? The answer is, they aren’t…because the only people you’re helping AREN’T citizens!! Who these Aldermen are helping are themselves. Helping themselves gather support and eventually illegal votes
If someone REALLY wanted to know what’s happening here, the author of the article seems to already have a good idea…
Gail Montenegro, an ICE spokeswoman, said three federal agents are stationed at the Cook County courthouse every weekday “to review the arrest records of subjects booked into custody the previous day.” They also review records and law enforcement databases of those defendants scheduled to appear in bond court.
“The previous day’s arrest records are made available to ICE by the state’s attorney’s office,” Montenegro said in an email.
Oh wow would you look at that. ICE being resourceful and using available records (provided by the city no less!!) to determine which offenders should be investigated. I just saved the city a whole lot of time and thousands and thousands of dollars.
